The Ultimate Guide to Low Maintenance Home Putting Green Installation

Home > Palm Beach County Artificial Turf Installation > The Ultimate Guide to Low Maintenance Home Putting Green Installation

If you’re a golf enthusiast living in South Florida, you owe it to yourself to consider installing your very own putting green. Not only will having your own putting green provide hours of enjoyment (and improve your short game), but it may also even raise your property value, which will pay dividends when it comes time to sell your home.

Installing a putting green is a pretty big project, but you can do it if you’re willing to invest the necessary time, labor, and money. We’ll walk you through the basic process below, so you can decide if this is a project you’d like to pursue.

Reasons to Install a Low-Maintenance Putting Green

There are a number of reasons that backyard putting greens are becoming one of the most popular landscaping projects in South Florida. Aside from the obvious (you get to play more golf), they offer several other benefits, including:

  • Unbeatable Convenience: With a putting green in your backyard, you can practice your short game whenever you like — no tee time required.
  • Curb Appeal: A well-designed putting green can make your property more beautiful, and it can even make your home more desirable to potential buyers.
  • Entertaining Guests: A backyard putting green provides hours of good, clean family fun, and it’ll make all of your parties and gatherings a blast.
  • Water Savings: By installing a low-maintenance putting green featuring artificial turf, you won’t have to install an irrigation system or hand water the grass.
  • Minimal Upkeep: Aside from the fact that artificial turf doesn’t require water, it doesn’t require mowing, fertilizing, or weeding either.

Step-by-Step: A Basic Putting Green Installation Plan

Because every property is different and homeowners have varying preferences, every putting green installation project will differ in several ways. However, the following steps will generally be required for all putting green projects.

1. Planning & Design

As with just about every landscaping or hardscaping project, the first thing you’ll need to do is plan and design the putting green. This means:

  • Deciding on the size, shape, and location of your green.
  • Considering the addition of things like fringe areas, chipping zones, or bunkers for variety.
  • Making sure the site has the kind of sun exposure you want, as well as proper drainage.

2. Excavation & Base Prep

With your design finalized, you can begin actually constructing your new putting green. This entails:

  • Excavating 3 to 4 inches of soil.
  • Installing a weed barrier to keep the green tidy.
  • Filling the hole with crushed and compacted granite or limestone to provide a firm, level base.

3. Turf Installation

Now that the site has been prepared properly, you can add turf. But that’s actually a multi-step process that includes several key steps:

  • Roll out your synthetic turf and let it “relax” for about an hour.
  • Trim the turf to fit the space.
  • Secure the turf with landscaping nails or staples.
  • Brush the turf and add infill to maintain a realistic texture and ensure the ball rolls properly.

4. Cup Installation

While the putting green surface should now be pretty close to finished, you’ll still need to add the cup. This means you’ll need to:

  • Cut one or more holes for the cups.
  • Insert the cups and ensure they’re flush with the surface.
  • Secure the cups and add backfill around the edges to keep them stable.

5. Finishing Touches

By this point, your green will look almost complete, but there are still a few additional steps you can complete to produce a polished, professional-looking putting green. For example, you may want to:

  • Add fringe turf for a natural transition from the surrounding landscape.
  • Install LED lighting, so you can use your putting green at night.
  • Incorporate a chipping mat or a small water feature.

Maintaining Your Artificial Putting Green

If you are going to go to all the trouble of building an artificial putting green, you’ll certainly want to ensure it lasts a long time. And even though these kinds of artificial greens require relatively little maintenance, there are a few things you’ll need to do to keep them looking great and functional.

This means:

  • Blowing or sweeping off leaves and debris weekly (or more often, when necessary).
  • Rinse it with water occasionally to clear dust or pollen.
  • Brushing the turf with a stiff broom to keep fibers upright.
  • Adding more infill material periodically (once per year is generally enough).
  • Inspecting all of the seams and edges for movement and wear over time.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Constructing a backyard putting green may be simple in theory, but it can often be difficult for homeowners to achieve a good result on their first attempt. However, if you simply avoid some of the most common mistakes people make when attempting this kind of project, you’ll likely wind up with a green that looks great and plays really well.

So, be sure that you don’t:

  • Choose the wrong turf. Not all turf is rated for putting, so you’ll want to choose a turf designed specifically for performance and ball speed.
  • Overlook the importance of drainage. A green that drains poorly will develop puddles, which will lead to mold and turf damage.
  • Forgot to compact the base layer. Failing to tamp down the base material thoroughly will often result in bumps, divots, and depressions.
  • Install the cups too high or too low. Take the time to ensure your cups fit precisely; otherwise, you won’t enjoy playing on the green as much.
  • Damage your turf, once installed: Avoid using things that’ll harm the turf, including metal rakes, harsh chemicals, and weed killers

We were referred to Pup Pavers thru the “Royal Palm Beach Group Speaks” on FB. They were totally professional from the owner-Matt , their installers & the liaison in the office-Danielle, Their pricing was fair met all our financial requirements & expectations. Danielle was so courteous, prompt & professional in guiding us thru the licensing process with the Village of RPB . They were prompt, professional, friendly, and did the job in a very timely manner. Even though we had some misunderstanding between us-their owners took it in stride ensuring us of a final outcome that we would be proud of within our community. Our driveway & pavers are the talk of our community. I highly recommend them for your home improvement if it’s includes pavers from your backyard pool to your front door and driveway.

It was a simple walk way tying my from sidewalk to the back walkway to the pool. I feel the job was done fantastically well and the cleaning is beyond my expectations. My 6’ level was bang on and the tie in from the new to the existing was exact.
