Is Professional Artificial Turf Installation Expensive?

Home > Palm Beach County Artificial Turf Installation > Is Professional Artificial Turf Installation Expensive?

Whether you are simply tired of struggling to keep your lawn green all year or you need something durable enough to handle all of the foot traffic your kids, pets, and visitors cause, artificial turf installation can be a fantastic way to keep your property looking great and eliminate the need to mow, water, or fertilize.

But deciding that you want to install artificial turf is only the first step; you also have to decide whether you’ll hire professionals or try to do the job yourself. Professional artificial turf installation will always provide the best possible results, but many homeowners worry that it will be cost-prohibitive.

We’ll try to help you decide by sharing the costs of professional turf installation below.

How Much Does Professional Artificial Turf Installation Cost in Palm Beach County?

Every artificial turf installation project is different, so the exact price homeowners and property managers can expect to pay will vary. With that said, artificial turf installation costs generally fall between $7 and $20 per square foot in the Palm Beach County area. This includes both the materials and professional installation.

Put another way, it will generally cost between about $3,500 and $10,000 to have a 500-square-foot portion of your property covered with artificial turf.

Is Hiring a Professional Turf Installer Worth the Price in Palm Beach County?

Unless you are a turf-installation professional, it will always be wise to have your turf project handled by experienced pros.

This is the best way to avoid problems like drainage issues or wrinkled turf, and it’ll also reduce the chances of experiencing ancillary problems, such as damaged irrigation lines or landscaping issues. And aside from enjoying better results and sidestepping most common turf installation issues, professional installation will prevent you from having to complete hours of backbreaking labor.

While some homeowners are willing to put in the work to avoid the labor costs associated with professional installation, the DIY approach will almost certainly take much longer than the same job would take professionals to complete. This means that if you value your spare time, you’ll simply be better off leaving the job to the pros.

Professional vs. DIY Artificial Turf: Cost Comparison

Installation labor accounts for roughly two-thirds of the total cost of an artificial turf project.

The materials themselves will generally cost between $2 and $8 per square foot, while labor costs are generally between about $5 and $12 per square foot. This means that if you took the DIY approach, you’d be able to acquire the actual turf required for a 500-square-foot project for around $1,200 to $3,500.

But — and this is important — you’ll still have to purchase or rent any tools or equipment needed to complete the project. And because some of these tools, such as sod cutters or skid steers, can be very expensive, a DIY approach may not allow you to save much money at all.

Plus, you’d still have to put in all the work yourself, and you will be unlikely to achieve results on par with what pros could achieve. This is part of the reason that professional installation is recommended — it’s just the better all-around solution.

What Determines the Price of Artificial Turf Installation in Palm Beach County?

There are a number of factors that will influence the total cost you’ll pay for artificial turf installation in Palm Beach County. And while you’ll simply need to reach out to your preferred contractor to find out exactly how much your project will cost, you can start to get an idea about where your costs will fall on the spectrum by considering the following factors:

Size of the Project Area

Understandably, the total square footage of your project will end up being the biggest cost driver — it costs more for a 500-square-foot patch of turf than it does for a 100-square-foot patch. However, larger areas are often quoted at a lower per-square-foot rate, which may provide some savings for extensive projects.

Type & Quality of Turf Selected

It’s important to note that not all artificial turf is created equal; there are no-frills, budget-friendly options, as well as premium alternatives featuring things like multi-tone blades, higher pile height, and heat-resistant fibers. The specific turf you opt to have installed will directly influence the total cost of your project — whether you install it yourself or leave it to the pros.

Ground Preparation Requirements

Installation projects that require extensive site prep will end up costing more than similar projects for areas that require only minimal prep work. For example, sod, rock, or gravel removal may increase the cost of turf installation, and uneven sites may require grading work or extra base material to be deposited.

Base Material & Thickness

Most installations require about 3 to 5 inches of decomposed granite or crushed rock, but some locations will require additional base material, which will result in higher installation costs. It’s also worth noting that the specific base material selected (as well as its local availability) will also factor into the project costs.

Access to the Work Area

Property access is an underappreciated factor that will influence the cost of a turf-installation project. But if your property is small, blocked by a fence, or lacks convenient road access, the job will require more manual labor. This will increase the overall costs you’ll face.

Edging & Border Requirements

Aside from the turf itself, you’ll also want to consider the types of edging or borders you choose for the project. If you want to have bender board, paver borders, concrete curbs, or custom edging installed, you’ll have to allow for higher material and labor costs.

Turf Seaming & Layout Complexity

The more curves and obstacles (including trees, playsets, planter beds, or hardscape features) involved in the project, the higher your costs will be. The number of seams involved in your project will also play a role in determining the cost, as projects with more seams will require more time and labor.

Drainage Solutions

If your property has poor drainage, additional steps may be required during the installation process. For example, you may need to have a French drain or sub-surface drain grids installed. You may also need additional gravel layers deposited below the turf. Generally speaking, the more drainage work (and materials) required, the more expensive the turf-installation project will be.
